Lions Prostheses Centre (Singapore)
BACKGROUND
Statistics show that Singapore has one of the world’s highest diabetes-related amputations; more than 1,500 annually or about 4 a day. The high costs of artificial limbs deprive some of the low-income victims, relying on clutches or wheelchairs for limited mobility, the joy of independence.
With the objective of reaching out to this group of amputees (due to diabetes, or other causes), who are unfortunately unable to pay for artificial limbs and also do not qualify for government funding, a group of Lions Clubs of Singapore initiated a new programme to provide them with prosthetic limbs free of charge or subsidised, so that they will enjoy a better quality of life and able to make a living wherever possible.
The programme which is named Lions Prostheses Centre (Singapore) was registered with the Singapore Registry of Societies in May 2020 (UEN T20SS0073D). The Centre will be rolling out its programme to needy amputees and sponsoring them with the fitting of prosthetic limbs. The costs of these artificial limbs will be funded from donations raised by members of Lions Prostheses Centre (Singapore).
Lions Prostheses Centre (Singapore) is a Social Service Agency reaching out to funding needy amputees for the procurement of prosthetic limbs. As it progresses towards establishing its own prostheses fabrication centre, more Lions Clubs are encouraged to come forward to join in this meaningful initiative to serve the community. Membership is opened to all operating chartered Lions Clubs of Singapore which are registered societies under the Societies Act (Cap 311) Singapore.
OBJECTIVE
Provide free or subsidized prosthetic limbs to low-income amputees to enable them to:
• enjoy a better quality of life
• not be dependent on wheel-chairs or crutches
• make a living wherever possible.
