Statistics show that Singapore has one of the world’s highest diabetes related amputations; more than 1,500 annually or about 4 a day. The high costs of artificial limbs deprive some of the low income victims the joy of independence, relying on clutches or wheel chairs for limited mobility.
With the objective of reaching out to this group of amputees (due to diabetes, or other causes), a group of Lions Clubs of Singapore have initiated a new program to provide prosthetic legs free of charge, or subsidised, to these low income amputees so that they will enjoy a better quality of life and able to make a living wherever possible. Its aim is also to provide awareness of diabetes prevention programs to the community.
The program which is named Lions Prostheses Center (LPC), had been registered with the Singapore Registry of Societies in May 2020 (UEN T20SS0073D). We will be rolling out our program to needy amputees and sponsoring them with the fitting of prosthetic limbs. The costs of these artificial limbs will be funded from donations raised by members of LPC.
LPC is a Social Service Agency reaching out to funding needy amputees for the procurement of prosthetic limbs. As we progress towards establishing our own prostheses fabrication center, we encourage more Lions Clubs to come forward to joins us in this meaningful initiative to serve the community. Membership is open to all operating chartered Lions Clubs of Singapore which are registered societies under the Societies Act (Cap 311) Singapore.
